Notes
As circumscribed here, L. excavatus is a very variable fern. Specimens with completely rounded frond apices (eg. V.D. van Someren 1926, Marsabit, forest, July 1959; Beentje 2224, Mt Kenya, Chuka track, 5.3 km inside forest, 22 Aug. 1985 & Faden 69/1018, Kiambu District, Kikuyu Escarpment above Mataara Tea Factory, 1 Jan. 1969, have usually been called Pleiopeltis rotunda (Bonap.) Tardieu but there are many intermediates. Certainly Gillett & Kariuki 18856 (Masai District, Chyulu Hills, 19 Oct. 1969) with large fronds to 26 x 4 cm, ± acute at apex and stipes to 7 cm appear very different but as Schelpe points out there are numerous intermediates between the extremes (see Contr. Bolus Herb. 1: 98–99 (1969)). Milne-Redhead & Taylor 8769 (Songea District: Matengo Hills) has one frond distinctly lobulate-crenate. De Boer (in sched.) records it from T 1 and from 500 m.
