Names
PLEIOCERAS orientale Vollesen [family APOCYNACEAE], in Bot. Tidsskr. 75: 59 (1980); Barink in Meded. Landbouwhogeschool 83 (7): 37, t. 4 (1983) & in F.Z. 7 (2): 484, t. 114 (1985). Type: Tanzania, Kilwa District, Malemba Thicket, Vollesen 4783 (C, holo., BR, EA!, K, LISC, WAG, iso.)
Information
Tree 5–12 m high, deciduous; branchlets densely pilose. Leaves petiolate; blade narrowly ovate or obovate, 3.5–14.5 cm long, 1–5.5 cm wide, puberulous above, tomentose beneath on the main veins; petiole 3–5 mm long, densely pilose. Inflorescence several-flowered, 4.5–6.5 cm long, pubescent on all parts; bracts 2.2–3 mm long, sometimes glabrous; peduncle 1–2 cm long; pedicels 7–15 mm long. Flowers with sepals green, 2–3 mm long, 1–2 mm wide; corolla yellow and violet or dark red, 13.5–20 mm long; tube 6–9 mm long; lobes 7.5–11 mm long, 4–6 mm wide, minutely pubescent outside, papillose inside; corona appendages bright yellow, 7, broomlike and filiform to truncate; stamens inserted 1.5–1.6 mm below the corolla mouth; pistil 8–9 mm long; style 6–8 mm long; ovules 120–150 in each carpel. Fruit dark green, follicles 20–30 cm long, 5–7 mm in diameter; seeds 10–18 mm long, greenish with a dense, 35 mm long tuft of hairs at the apex. Fig. 25 (p. 72).

Notes
USES. None recorded. Bally 11537 fromT2, Masai District: between Endulen and Lake Eyassi at 1700 m is possibly this species. The material consists of follicles only.Luke (pers. comm.) has seen this species in K 7, Kwale District: Mwele Forest, in Oct. 2001. The material was glabrous, similar to that of Pedro & Pedrogao 5225 from Niassa, Mozambique.
