Information
Subshrub or woody herb, 0.4–1.2 m tall (in Somalia). Leaves petiolate, rather densely pubescent with greyish hairs; blade ovate to broadly ovate, 40–100 × 15–50 mm, apex acute to rounded, base cuneate-attenuate, margin crenate. Inflorescences rather lax; bracts narrowly or broadly ovate, early deciduous; cymes 3–5-flowered, subsessile; pedicels 4–9 mm long in the fruiting stage, with short glands and much longer often over 1 mm long eglandular hairs. Fruiting calyx 6–9 mm long, densely villous inside the throat; upper lip suborbicular or broadly ovate, concave, decurrent; lower lobes 3–4 mm long, slightly longer than the lateral lobes. Corolla 17–19(–25) mm long (in Somalia), purple-violet; lower lip 8–16 mm long, much longer than the upper lip. Stamens connate. Nutlets c. 1.5 × 1.2 mm, black, glossy, producing mucilage when wet.

N1 Eritrea, Ethiopia, Sudan, East Africa, Arabia, India to Sri Lanka, South China and Thailand.

Notes
P. barbatus is a very variable species. Plants from Somalia are smaller and more small-flowered than most of the plants from East Africa, and have broader leaves than many of the plants from Ethiopia.
