Information
Shrub or small slender tree 7.5–15 m tall; bark thin and scaly, peeling to produce a mottled trunk; essentially glabrous but with dense glands on stems and leaves. Leaves very aromatic, obovate to elliptic, 3–15 cm long, 1.2–7.5 cm wide, acute to broadly rounded at the apex, coriaceous. Flowers white, 5-merous, small, in many flowered ((5–)15–100) panicles 2.5–12 cm long. Fruit subglobose, 6–12 mm diameter, 1–4-seeded (2–8 fide T.T.C.L.).
Notes
Bayrum tree, native of West Indies and northern South America, has been grown in Tanzania (Lushoto District: Sigi, 15 Feb. 1921, Soleman A.H. 6054 & Sigi Chini 16, 9 Dec. 1940, Greenway 6071 & Amani Chini Plantation, 23 Mar. 1973, Ruffo 657 & 1051; has been recorded from Zanzibar and Pemba).: The nomenclatural complications of the last two species are explained by Landrum, Fl. Neotropica, Mon. 45: 79, 83, 107 (1986). He also figures both species, fig. 24 & 45.
