Information
Erect or ascending annual or perennial, up to 1 m tall, without glands; stems glabrous. Ochreae covered by short bristly hairs and fringed with 10–25 mm long stiff bristles. Leaves sessile or almost so, linear-lanceolate, 8–15 x 0.7–2 cm, acute, usually glabrous except for ciliate margins and veins beneath. Spikes slender, 2–9 cm long, with a markedly zigzag appearance when young; bracts fringed with bristles c. 1 mm long. Perianth pink or white, 2–2.5(–3) mm long; tepals 5. Nut usually trigonous, 2–2.5 mm long, black, glossy.
Range
N2 widespread in tropical Africa, also in Arabia, tropical Asia, Australia and America, and in S Europe.
