Information
Loosely tufted annual or short-lived perennial; culms 30–60 cm. high, ascending, tough and wiry. Leaf-blades lanceolate to narrowly ovate, 1–7 cm. long, 3–12 mm. wide, glaucous. Spike 5–30 cm. long, long-exserted from the uppermost sheath, the spikelets densely packed and ascending or spreading horizontally. Spikelets 1.2–2.7 mm. long, rounded at the base and without a definite callus; glumes scaberulous to minutely hispidulous, with a flexuous awn 9–17 mm. long. Caryopsis terete.

Notes
Best separated from the other African species by the complete absence of a stalk-like base on the fallen spikelet. The spikelets have rather a wide size range, but this is apparently continuous and without taxonomic significance.
