Notes
P. luridum is a very variable species and the plants which resemble the type of the synonym P. heckmannianum (all specimens collected in Angola, N. Rhodesia, Nyasaland and some from the Inyanga district) may represent a good subspecies. These have leaves of a rougher texture, prominent venules, shorter peduncles (10–35 cm.), fewer flowers per pseudumbel (5) 7–10 (20), flowers always yellow (or red in Angola), and in most cases the flowers develop before the leaves. I have not, however, recognized P. heckmannianum as a subspecies since the whole species aggregate presents further problems in S. Africa, which cannot be dealt with in the scope of this Flora. I have added P. zeyheri and P. rehmannii as synonyms as they both show gradation to the typical P. luridum, although the types look quite distinct.
