Creeping or climbing herb to 4 m long, bad-smelling, pilose with spreading yellowish hairs. Leaves 3(–5)-lobed, 3–10 cm long, cordate at the base; petiole 1–6 cm long; stipules 0.5–1 cm long, deeply divided into gland-tipped processes. Inflorescences 1(–2)-flowered on 2–6 cm long peduncles; bracts and bracteoles forming a much divided glandular-hairy involucre enveloping the flower. Flowers 3–5 cm in diam., white to pink. Hypanthium saucer-shaped; sepals 1.5–2 cm long, awned below the apex. Corona consisting of 2 outer series of threads c. 1 cm long, and inward several series of thinner and shorter threads. Styles 4–5 mm long. Fruit subglobose, 1.5–3 cm in diam., yellowish to orange, enveloped by persistent involucre.
