Information
Creeping stoloniferous perennial. Culms 8–60 cm. high. Racemes paired (rarely 3), each 2–8 cm. long, the spikelets borne singly in 2 rows on a rhachis 1–2 mm. wide. Spikelets 3–4 mm. long, ovate, plump, green. Inferior glume present on at least some spikelets as a tiny scale. Superior glume and inferior lemma somewhat coriaceous, the glume nearly always obscurely pubescent. Superior lemma pallid at maturity.
Habitat
Damp depressions and marshy, but not saline, soils. It occurs only as an escape in the Flora Zambesiaca area, but has become a serious weed in S. Africa.
Range
Tropics, but shunning the equatorial belt and extending to warm temperate regions
Distribution
Zimbabwe W Railway between Hwange and Victoria Falls, iii.1960, West in GHS 107816 (K; SRGH).
Notes
It closely resembles P. vaginatum, which has led to some nomenclatural confusion as the type sheet bears specimens of both species. This has now been resolved by lectotypification (Brummitt in Taxon 32: 281 1983).
