Tufted perennial from a knotty base, the stems up to 60 cm high, erect or geniculately ascending, sometimes decumbent to form hard stolons. Inflorescence 4–20 cm long; racemes 0.3–3 cm long, contiguous (but the lowermost usually remote), the rhachis triquetrous, 0.2–0.4 mm wide, glabrous to puberulous. Spikelets ovate, 1.7–2.6 mm long; lower glume obtuse or truncate, 1/3–1/2 the length of the spikelet; upper glume 3/4 as long to as long as the spikelet; upper lemma granulose or weakly rugulose.
