Information
Tree 5–40 m. high (fide F.C.B.), usually about 5–15 m. in East Africa; bark grey-brown, fairly smooth, with very fine longitudinal striations; branchlets glabrous, or sometimes (especially in Kenya) ± pubescent when young. Leaves glabrous, or rarely with some pubescence especially on rhachis, petiolules and near leaflet-bases; leaflets ± falcate and lanceolate, oblong-lanceolate, or sometimes ovate, (2.5–)4–10(–15, fide F.C.B.) cm. long, (1.4–)1.8–4.3(–6, fide F.C.B.) cm. wide, tapering-acuminate at apex, rounded to broadly cuneate at base; network of veins very close and rather prominent on both surfaces. Inflorescence glabrous except for bracts; pedicels 1.5–3 cm. long; bracteoles thick and hard, elliptic or oblong-elliptic, 2–3–3.2(–3.7, fide F.C.B.) cm. long, 1–1.8 cm. wide, glabrous outside, densely tomentellous within. Hypanthium glabrous. Largest petal obovate, 3–3.5(–4.7, fide F.C.B.) cm. long, 1–2.3 cm. wide. Pods 8.5–18(–20, fide F.C.B.) cm. long, 2.5–5(–6, fide F.C.B.) cm. wide. Seeds dark brown, ± quadrate, 1.3–2.5 cm. long, 1–2 cm. wide. Fig. 34, p. 156.
