Information
Tufted perennial up to 50 cm high; basal sheaths remaining intact. Panicle loosely or densely contracted, spike-like or lobed. Glumes often deeply suffused with purple, the lower 7-nerved, 3.5–7.5(–10) mm long, the upper 7-nerved, 4.5–10.3 mm long; fertile lemma 6–13 mm long (including awns), hairy on the back all over; awns ciliate; anthers 0.6–1 mm long; third lemma often well developed (but barren), 2.5–9(–10.5) mm long, sometimes accompanied by a vestigial fourth lemma.

N1–3; C1, 2; S1, 2 tropical Africa, south-western Asia to southern India.
Altitude range
160–1500 m.
