Information
Annual; culms slender, 25–70 cm. high. Leaf-blades spreading to deflexed, narrowly lanceolate, (2–)4–10(–15) cm. long, (2–)4–10 mm. wide, narrowed to widened at the base, flat, membranous, pale, often yellowish green, glabrous or pilose, acute or acuminate. Panicle broadly ovate to oblong, (3–)5–12(–18) cm. long, moderately to much branched. Spikelets broadly ovate-elliptic, 1.8–2.2(–2.5) mm. long, glabrous, acute; lower glume 2/3 the length of the spikelet, 3-nerved, acute; upper glume 5-nerved, acute; lower lemma 5-nerved, ♂, its palea well developed; upper lemma and palea verruculose.

DISTR. T4, 7, 8 southwards to Zimbabwe and Angola; also in W. Africa

Notes
Specimens from W. Africa are noticeably more robust and larger than those from E. Africa, where this species is confined strictly to Brachystegia woodland. P. lindleyanum Steud., a similarly small annual species from W. Africa, Central African Republic, Cameroun and Zambia may be distinguished by the ascending, narrow leaf-blades up to 3 mm. wide and slightly smaller spikelets 1.4–1.7 mm. long.
