Information
Loosely tufted annual, the culms often weak and procumbent or geniculately ascending; culms 20–100 cm. high. Leaf-blades narrowly lanceolate, 1–15 cm. long, 3–15 mm. wide, the margins cartilaginous. Inflorescence of 6–15 racemes on an axis 5–20 cm. long; racemes 1–10 cm. long with ± pubescent triquetrous rhachis, the spikelets borne on short secondary branchlets or in dense fascicles, these copious so that the inflorescence resembles a panicle. Spikelets elliptic, 1.5–2.5 mm. long, glabrous or more often pubescent, sometimes with a transverse fringe of hairs up to 1 mm. long near the tip, obtuse or acute, without a stipe; lower glume 1/3–1/2(–3/4) the length of the spikelet; upper lemma striate or granulose, acute. Notes
Spikelet indumentum varies considerably but continuously, so that there is no basis for the recognition of segregate taxa. Vegetative proliferation of the spikelets is quite common. Despite the compound racemes there is no doubt that the species should be placed in Brachiaria, for it is very closely allied to B. scalaris. Indeed species 26–31 are all very closely related and difficult to separate.
