Names
PANICUM poaeoides Stapf [family POACEAE], in F.T.A. 9: 681 (1920); R.K.G.: 39 (1958); G.T.: 61 (1965). Types: Kenya, Nairobi, Lindon 213 & Dowson 256 (both K, syn.!)
PANICUM acutissimum Peter [family POACEAE], F.D.O.-A. 1, Anh.: 48, t. 13/4 (1930). Tanzania, N. Pare, Peter 11409 (B, syn.†) & Arusha District, Meru, Peter 2636 (B, syn.†). The habit illustration does not agree with the description and appears to be another species.

Information
Loosely tufted perennial with a knotty base; culms 30–60(–90) cm. high, usually unbranched. Leaf-blades linear, 6–8(–26) cm. long, 3–8 mm. wide, straight or narrowed at the base, flat, sparsely to densely pilose or hispid with tubercle-based hairs, acuminate. Panicle ovate, 6–12(–16) cm. long, erect, much branched, usually dense and compact. Spikelets ovate, 2.3–3.2 mm. long, often purple tinged; lower glume broadly ovate, 1/2–2/3 the length of the spikelet, 1-nerved or faintly 3–5-nerved, acute to acuminate; upper glume ovate, 7-nerved, acute to acuminate; lower lemma ovate, 7-nerved, acute, ♂, its palea well developed; upper lemma clearly 7-nerved, greenish and glossy.
