Information
Annual or short-lived perennial; stems robust, up to 200 cm high and 5–10 mm in diam. at the base, erect or decumbent, often rooting from the lower nodes; leaves linear, 20–50 cm x 7–15 mm, cordate to straight at the base. Panicle ovate or oblong, 20–50 cm long, sparsely to moderately branched, spreading, the spikelets evenly dispersed. Spikelets ovate, 3–4 mm long, acuminate; lower glume broadly ovate, 1/4–1/3 the length of the spikelet, 1- to 3-nerved, cuff-like and clasping, obtuse or acute; upper lemma pallid, smooth and glossy.
Range
S3 throughout tropical Africa.
Altitude range
low altidude.

SOMALIA Scassellati & Mazzocchi s.n.
Notes
Only recorded from the Juba valley at “Elvalda” by Chiovenda, Result. Sci. Miss. Stefanini-Paoli 1: 226 (1916), as P. proliferum var. longijubatum. The single collection cited has not been seen and the record needs confirmation.
