Notes
This local species has frequently been misidentified as P. foliosa Ker Gawl., which differs by its obtuse leaves, less conspicuous hair-tufts lacking basal crescent-shaped scales, retuse petals, and smaller black seeds. P. foliosa is found in sandy river beds, whereas P. massaica appears to grow only in rocky or stony places. Napper 1560 (Kitui District, 1.5 km W of Mwingi on Thika road, 3 May 1960) differs from P. massaica only by its different seed. The testa cells are larger, and stellate-conical in shape. (P. foliosa sensu U.K.W.F., ed. 2: 65 (1994), non Ker Gawl.)
