A tree, 12–15 ft. high, pilose-hispid on the young parts, &c. Leaves oval or oblong, shortly acuminate, sessile or subsessile, auriculate-cordate at base, membranous, glabrescent except hispidulous veins beneath, 10–20 by 6–11 in. or larger, lateral veins about 12 pairs; stipules ovate, acute, connate at base, 1 1/4 in., erect. Flowers 4–6 in. long, very slender, numerous, on short pedicels, in much-branched axillary panicles shorter than the leaves, pentamerous. Bracteoles small, subulate. Calyx-limb cup-shaped, green, glabrous or hispidulous except the subulate-filiform subequal teeth of 1/10 in., or in fruit ranging up to 1/2 in., persistent. Corolla glabrous, white; lobes lanceolate 5/8– 3/4 in. long. Anthers 1/4 in. Fruit 1 by 3/4 in., rather pointed at apex and crowned by the persistent calyx-limb, slightly narrowed or nearly rounded at base. Seeds 1/4– 1/3 in. long by 1/6– 1/5 in., inserted by the top of the inner horizontal side. Embryo nearly 1/4 in. long; radicle 1/8 in.
