ORYZA perennis [family POACEAE], [sensu G.T.: 49 (1965), non Moench. The type of Moench’s species was a plant cultivated at Marburg, now lost, but the description suggests that it was a form of O. sativa. The correct application of the name cannot now be ascertained, and it is best discarded.]
Information
Perennial with extensive creeping underground rhizomes. Culms ± 120 cm. high, soft and spongy, up to 1 cm. in diameter at the base, often decumbent and rooting at the lower nodes. Leaf-blades up to 45 cm. long and 1.5 cm. broad; ligule 15–45 mm. long, glabrous, acute, often split down the middle. Panicle typically 20–30 cm. long. Spikelets narrowly oblong, 7–9 mm. long, scabrid to hispid, deciduous, obliquely articulated with the pedicel; sterile lemmas lanceolate, 2–3 mm. long; awn 4–8 cm. long, rigid.
