Information
Plants relatively small to tall and robust, up to 2 m. high. Bulb 2-15 cm. across. Scape erect to curved, 20-180 cm. Leaves lanceolate to linear-lanceolate, up to 130 cm. long, 0.5-6.7 cm. broad. Inflorescence a raceme with 15-300 flowers; pedicels 2-15 mm. during anthesis; bracts lanceolate to ovate-acuminate, 4-80 mm. long. Perianth-segments 5-11 mm., with many vascular bundles assembled in a green midrib. Filaments 3-8 mm., ovate-acuminate with or without a tooth on each side. Ovary ellipsoid, 2.5-5 mm., without a carpophore; style ± as long as the ovary. Capsule 5-13 mm. long. Seeds 4-6 mm. long.

Chromosome number 2n = 12, 16.The two subSPECIES described in Stedje & Nordal (1984) are not maintained here, as further investigations of O. tenuifolium over a larger geographical area have shown that the there is little or no correlation of tendencies of morphological discontinuities and chromosome numbers/karyotypes (cf. Nordal & Stedje in Kirkia 14: 12-18 (1993)).The bulb of O. tenuifolium is very poisonous.
