Annual or perennial herb, up to 50 cm tall, glabrous. Leaves numerous, linear to linear-spathulate, 10–40 x 1–2 mm, glaucous. Flowers white, bisexual, in elongating spikes; bracts with white margins. Sepals 2–4(–5), 1–2 mm long. Petals 2, persistent. Stamens 3–4, about as long as petals. Ovary ovoid-globose, sulcate, with 4 conical apical teeth. Capsules 2.5–3.5 mm long and wide, glabrous, scabrid or ridged, deeply sulcate. Seeds becoming black, smooth or practically so, glossy.
