Annual or perennial erect or suberect herbs (7)10–80 cm. tall, unbranched or few to several slender to robust stems ascending from often contracted basal, often ± woody nodes to 7 mm. in diam. (occasionally subterranean); stems sparsely to densely scabrid, papillose, ± hirtellous or more rarely ± glabrous. Leaves (10)14–51(70) x (0.6)1.3–8(9.5) mm., linear to narrowly linear-lanceolate or narrowly lanceolate-elliptic, rarely both surfaces or mostly upper surface and/or only margins and midrib beneath sparsely scabrid-papillose or sparsely hirtellous, apex acute, narrowed to the base, rarely ± fleshy, margins mostly revolute; stipular sheath (0.5)0.9–1.8(2.8) mm. long, scabrid-papillose, sparsely hirtellous or ± glabrous, stipular lobes (0.7)1–4.5(8) mm. long, occasionally with additional fimbriae on either side. Inflorescences extensive, usually 2 flowers at a node, either both ± sessile or one sessile and the other shortly to distinctly pseudo-pedicellate, rarely single at a node; peduncles (0)5–95 mm. long; (pseudo-) pedicels (0.5)1–10(17) mm. long; all parts scabrid-papillose, pubescent or ± glabrous tike the stem. Calyx tube (0.5)0.7–1.8(2.2) x (0.7)0.9–1.7(2) mm., ovoid-ellipsoid, densely beset with coarse round, conical or flattened triangular papillae, or ± densely hirtellous, very rarely glabrous; lobes narrowly triangular-lanceolate (6.4)0.6–1.9(2.1) mm. long and 0.2–0.6(6.7) mm. wide at the base, scabrid or only margins scabrid. Flowers scented from the evening to early morning; corolla lobes above white, cream, greyish or yellowish, darker beneath, the tube slightly lighter - brownish, reddish or greenish, glabrous or back of corolla lobes ± sparsely papillose especially along midveins and tips; tube altogether (6)6.5–14( 16.1) mm. long, the apical part abruptly widened, slightly constricted above, (1)1.5–2.6(2.8) x (0.6)0.7–1.3(1.6) mm., the narrow part 0.3–0.7(0.9) mm. wide; lobes narrowly oblong-lanceolate to very narrowly oblong-elliptic (2)2.8–6(7.8) x 0.5–1.5(2.3) mm., not quite parted to the base, ± acute. Anthers ovoid-oblong, c. one half to two thirds the length of the widened tube, rarely as long but then the tips included, sterile connnectives often darkly discoloured; pollen (3)4-(5) colporate. Style and stigma together one third to two thirds the length of the narrow tube; stigma lobes 1–2 mm. long, very rarely tips touching the anthers. Capsules (1.1)1.8–3.9(4.5) x (2.2)2.7–4.5(6.1) mm., subglobose, sparsely to densely coarsely verrucose, papillose, hirtellous or t glabrous. Seeds light to dark brown, angular-subconic, c. 0.4–0.7 mm. long.
Habitat
Open flat sandy areas, sand veld, thin bushland in shady places, in rocky or stony areas, near or in ephemeral water-courses, floodplains, also in secondary grass-land, open thickets and wooded grassland, in disturbed areas along paths and roads; mainly in well-drained sandy soils or occasionally in seasonally water-logged areas, e.g. clay soils near swamps, etc.
