Information
Shrub or small tree (0.3–)2–10(–15) m tall, deciduous, with tough or deeply furrowed black or dark grey corky bark, yellow beneath; branches at first purplish with pale lenticels, later whitish. Leaves oblong or elliptic to oblanceolate or obovate, 2.5–7.7(–11.8) cm long, (0.9–)1–2.6(–3.6) cm wide, acute or shortly mucronate to rounded at the apex, cuneate at the base, densely glandular-serrate, the teeth often a characteristic orange-brown; venation with primary lateral veins ascending, with more widely spreading secondary laterals and tertiary cross veins, prominent above; petiole 1–2.5 mm long. Flowers appearing before the leaves or when leaves are young or few, solitary or 2.4(–8) in fascicles, axillary or terminating short shoots, scented; pedicels 1–2 cm long. Sepals white or greenish, oblong, 3–4(–5) mm long, rounded, reflexed after flowering and becoming crimson, enlarging to 7–9(–10) mm in fruit and more spreading. Petals white or cream, oblong-lanceolate, 4–5 mm long, narrowed to base. Stamens 10–11; anthers yellow, 1.5–2.5 mm long. Carpels 5; styles completely united. Drupelets black, 6–7 mm long and wide. Notes
Robson gives up to 1525 m in E Africa but this is based on inadequate labels. Johnston s.n., Kilimanjaro 5000’, was not collected on the mountain but on the journey from the coast. Wigg 381 a duplicate at K from Imperial Forestry Institute, very inadequately labelled, states Lushuto but certainly was not collected there.
