herbaceous; stem erect or ascending, up to 3 ft. high; branches slender, more or less distinctly triquetrous, papillose; leaves from linear to lanceolate, 1–2 in. long, 1–3 lin. wide, acuminate, sometimes trifid, pubescent; ochreæ 3 lin. long, tubular, pubescent, setæ about 10, pallid, shorter than the tubular part; racemes terminal, lax, slender, up to 6 in. long; bracts oblique, subulate, not setose, pubescent; pedicels 2–4 in the axil of each bract, shortly exserted; perianth nearly 3 lin. long, cylindrical and densely pubescent below, campanulate and less densely so above; lobes twice as long as the tube, oblong, acute; stamens half as long as the perianth; anther-cells diverging at the base; fruit triquetrous, acuminate, not winged nor spiny, slightly toothed at the base, smooth between the angles. null
