Information
Twigs almost glabrous to densely covered with short stiff spreading hairs. Leaves alternate; petiole 2–6 mmlong; blade thinly leathery, grey-green to slightly glaucous, linear-lanceolate to elliptic, obovate or oblanceolate, bluntly pointed to rounded, 1–5.5 × 0.4–4 cm, subglabrous to densely velvety-hairy on both surfaces, with 1–2 pairs of strongly ascending nerves from a little above base or venation obscure. Flowers clustered in the axils or at nodes below; pedicel 0.5–2 mm long; bract cupular, 2–3 mm long, subglabrous to densely hairy with longer cilia. Receptacle 1–1.2 mm long; calyx tubular, 4–6 mm long, ciliolate. Corolla 2–2.7 cmlong, usually yellow fading orange, but sometimes red, opening by a unilateral split; tube narrow, 6–8 mm long; lobes narrow, recurving and twisted to coiled after anthesis, expanded at base to form pouches around vents of maturing buds. Filaments without a tooth in front of the anther. Berry red, obovoid-ellipsoid, 6–7 × 4–5 mm, verrucose.
Range
N1; C2; S1–3 along the Great Rift Valley and its flanks from Ethiopia to central Tanzania.
Altitude range
100–1250 m.

Notes
Camels are said to really seek it out. It is cut down for other stock and it is also sought by most antelope.
