Information
Stout or weak aquatic herb with tuberous rhizome. Leaves 8–30 x 6–28 cm., orbicular, suborbicular or elliptic, coriaceous, incised-cordate, peltate, lobes obtuse or acute, divergent, nearly closed or overlapping, margin entire or slightly undulate towards the base, upper surface green, smooth, under surface green, red or purple, nervation raised or flat, primary lateral nerves 5–8 on each side of the midrib, 4–5 pairs of secondary nerves arising from the midrib. Flowers blue or pink, 6–20 cm. in diam. Sepals normally 4, 3–8 x 1.1–2.5 cm., oblong-ovate or oblong-lanceolate, green, sometimes marked with dark purple lines or dots, sometimes with reddish-purple margins. Petals 12–24, as long the sepals, oblong-lanceolate, obtuse or acute, some outer ones occasionally sepaloid. Stamens 30–100 or more. Carpels 14–24; style short. Fruit 2–4 cm. in diam., depressed-globose. Seeds 1.1 mm. long, ellipsoid, with longitudinal lines of hairs.
Habitat
Aquatic plant of rivers, lakes and pools.
Range
widespread in tropical Africa and in the Transvaal.
