an annual or perennial herb, 1/3–1 1/2 ft. high; stems erect, ascending or decumbent, more or less branched, terete, softly and adpressedly pubescent above, rather slender, sometimes shrubby near the base; branches pubescent, leafy; leaves oblong-lanceolate, sublinear or narrowly elliptical, obtuse, rounded at the subpetiolate base, strongly dentate or subpinnatifid, more or less pubescent, 1/2–2 in. long, 1/8– 5/8 in. broad; floral leaves about 1/2– 3/4 in. long, oval-oblong or -lanceolate; petioles broad, the lower evident, the upper obsolete; spikes short or elongating, dense, several- or many-flowered, terminal; flowers 1 1/4–1 3/4 in. long, very sweet-scented by night; calyx 1/3– 1/2 in. long; corolla-tube slender, glandular-pubescent outside, glabrous within; limb about 1/2 in. in diam., milk-white within, dark brown-purple or blackish-violet outside, expanding at evening twilight and closing at morning twilight; lobes bifid; throat shortly hairy; stamens 4; capsule 3/8 in. long. null
