Perennial herb with a stout rootstock, 14–45 cm, much-branched from the base upwards with the stems erect or sprawling, glabrous or sparingly furnished with short and sometimes longer multicellular hairs. Leaf-blade broadly ovate, shortly acuminate, shortly cuneate or shallowly subcordate at the base, main stem leaves 16–35 x 10–28 mm, cartilaginous-margined, glabrous or with divergent hairs on the margins and lower surface of the primary venation; petiole of lower leaves c. 1–3 cm. Flowers creamy or greenish-yellow, in long-pedunculate axillary racemes 1.5–6 cm long, peduncles and axis glabrous to sparingly papillate-scabrid. Outer tepals of fertile flowers 4–6 mm, elliptic-oblong, 3–8-nerved with the laterals often branched; inner tepals slightly shorter, hyaline, broad and blunt. Style (2–)2.5–3 mm, the stigmas finally long and recurved. Fruiting partial inflorescences very spiny, 9–14 mm in diam. including the spines, which are compressed and broad-based, the outer spines of each sterile flower joined by a veined web.
