Notes
Generally at higher altitudes or in more open situations than subsp. salicifolia, but forest trees from Elgon and the Cherangani Hills have leaves much as the latter and may be distinguished only by the quite different male catkins. Specimens from the central Kenya Highlands approach subsp. kilimandscharica and the exact limits of the subspecies in this area are not yet certain. The leaves of subsp. mildbraedii are normally flat at the margins but this character is not invariable, and distinction is then ultimately dependent on the shape of the style-arms. Bally 4756 (Nakuru District, Maru Forest, Sitoton to Endabarra) has leaves persistently hairy beneath with long hairs on midrib and petiole. The ?K4 record is based on Bally 6533 from Timau, Ngusishi Farm, 25 Dec. 1949, alt. 2550 m – but this is in ripe fruit only.
