Notes
M. usambarensis is based on sterile shoots, possibly from a sucker, the leaves being shortly petiolate and biserrate. The differences in leaf-shape between flowering and sucker shoots is demonstrated well for example by Drummond & Hemsley 1619 cited above. We infer from the type-locality that M. usambarensis is a synonym of this subspecies. Gardner (F.D. 2947) gives the lower altitudinal limit as 750 m. Certain material from Burundi appears indistinguishable from this variety but no young flowers are available, only fruits.
