Information
Shrub 2–6 m. high, spreading, evergreen, with bark light brown; branches slender, dark red or blackish, terete (or rarely somewhat angular) and striate at first, becoming reddish- to purplish-brown and polished. Leaves petiolate; lamina (8·5) 10·3–16·2 (18) × (2·6) 3·1–5·1 (5·9) cm., oblong to elliptic (rarely obovate or oblanceolate), acute to shortly and suddenly acuminate at the apex, with margin sharply serrulate, narrowly cuneate to rounded at the base, chartaceous to subcoriaceous, with ascending main lateral nerves linked by numerous widely spreading secondary veins and tertiary reticulations scarcely prominent on either surface; petiole 4–7 mm. long, rather slender, not enlarged towards the base; stipules 3–5 mm. long, free, caducous. Flowers solitary or in clusters of 2–7 in axils of deciduous bracts on a terminal paniculate inflorescence (shorter to longer than surrounding leaves), with 1–4 ± elongate spreading lateral branches; rhachis slender, olive-green to purplish-red, slightly compressed, angular, striate; basal bracts caducous; peduncle short; pedicels 6–12 mm. long in fruit, equalling or exceeding the sepals, articulated at the base or within 4 mm. of it (in the lower 1/3). Sepals c. 6 mm. long in flower, lanceolate, subacute, becoming 7–10 mm. long, red and spreading in fruit. Petals yellow, 7–10 × 4–7 mm., obovate, with apex refuse or rounded. Stamens with anthers 4 mm. long, orange-yellow, rugose and narrowed above. Carpels 5. Drupelets (6) 8–9 × (4) 5–6 mm., ellipsoid to cylindric, slightly compressed, not carinate.

Notes
O. andongensis has been confused with O. hiernii, but can easily be distinguished by several characters, notably the more slender blackish to purplish inflorescence-rhachis and the more prominent leaf venation.
