Information
Tufted perennial; culms 80–200 cm. high. Leaf-blades 10–60 cm. long, 2–7 mm. wide. Panicle 15–30 cm. long; racemes straggling, 3–10 cm. long, composed of up to 15 spikelet pairs, the pedicels occasionally barren but mostly bearing a spikelet similar to the sessile. Spikelets lanceolate, 5.5–7 mm. long; callus rounded, shortly bearded; glumes coriaceous, pilose; upper lemma bilobed, with a bigeniculate awn 12–20 mm. long from the sinus.

Notes
In this and the following species many, if not most, of the pedicels bear perfect spikelets. Although differing from typical members of Sorghastrum in this respect, they conform in most other characters and would be misplaced in any other genus.
