Information
Small or medium sized tree with rounded crown, usually up to c. 15 m tall, rarely to 25 m tall; milky latex usually present; young branchlets often forming spurs (short shoots), c. 2–3 cm long, with leaves usually densely clustered, but leaves sometimes also along normal long shoots. Leaves: petiole 3.5–5 cm long, usually about half the length of the blade; blade somewhat leathery, elliptic to elliptic-oblong, 4–12 x 3–4 cm, bluntly cuneate at the base, acute or broadly acute at the apex. Flowers single or up to 4 in axillary clusters, on stiff erect or spreading, 10–15 mm long pedicels; flower-buds c. 5 x 3 mm, blunt. Sepals: outer c. 6 x 3 mm, with indumentum of rusty brown hairs and with a pale or white stripe along the margin, inner sepals slightly smaller. Corolla white or cream, c. 7 mm long, tube c. 4 mm long, lobes c. 3.5 mm long. Stamens: filaments c. 0.5 mm long; anthers c. 2 mm long. Staminodes c. 2 mm long. Ovary c. 1.5 mm in diam.; style c. 3 mm long. Fruit a berry, c. 3.5 x 2 cm. Seed c. 2 x 1.2 cm; testa pale to dark brown; scar circular, almost basal, pale.

Introduced in Uganda, Sudan and Egypt (where used in funeral rites in Pharonic times, see discussion by Friis in Kew Bull. 35: 785–792, 1981). A record of M. kummel A.DC. in northern Somalia by Hutchinson & Bruce in Kew Bull. 1941: 142 (1941) and in Cuf. Enum.: 665 (1960) was based on Gillett 4690 that is M. laurifolia.
