Subsp. grandiflora (Guill. & Perr.) Polhill replaces subsp. rooseveltii further west in Africa, from Mali to Senegal and Gambia, and differs by the uniformly hairy calyx and the presence of a rather persistent indumentum on the midrib of the leaflets beneath. Subsp. inermis probably occurs naturally in forests around the Gulf of Guinea and is widespread in the New World tropics; it differs by the smaller flowers (calyx 3–3.5(–4) mm. long; keel 8–12 mm. long; style 2.5–4 mm. long). Subsp. inermis has been cultivated at Amani (Sigi Chini, Greenway 6675 !).
