Information
Woody climber 3–8 m long; stem glabrous, rarely with remains of floccose indumentum. Leaves ovate, 4–9 cm long, 2.8–6 cm wide, base subcordate, margins entire or sparsely denticulate near the base, apex acuminate, glabrous or sometimes floccose above when young; palmately 5–7-veined from the base; petioles 2.5–4 cm long. Capitula in terminal and upper axillary racemes or panicles with glandular axes, disciform; stalks of individual capitula 4–14 mm long; involucre obconic, 5–7.5 mm long; bracts of calyculus 2–3, lanceolate, 2 mm long, ciliate; phyllaries 7–8, linear-oblong, 4.4–7.5 mm long, acute and short-hairy at the apex, otherwise glabrous to puberulous. Florets 8–12, the outer female, the inner hermaphrodite; corolla white, 4.5–7.5 mm long, lobes 0.4–1.2 mm long; style arms slightly narrowed towards apex, tip truncate or rounded. Achenes cylindrical, 2–3 mm long, ribbed, glabrous; pappus 4–8 mm long, creamy white.

USES. None recorded on specimens from our area CONSERVATION Widespread; least concern (LC) Lisowski (1991) states that M. vitalba has 14–16 florets per capitulum, but the range of the florets was found to be 8–12.
