culms erect, 3/4–2 ft. long, compressed below, 2-noded, woolly below the spike, otherwise usually glabrous, upper 2 internodes very long, exserted; leaves mostly crowded at the base; basal sheaths imbricate, firm, persistent, compressed, keeled, hairy or glabrescent, bearded at the mouth, striate, the uppermost slightly tumid, glabrous; ligule a ciliolate rim; blades linear, acute to obtuse, 3–10 in. by 1/2–1 1/2 lin. when flattened out, glaucous, glabrous or hairy to woolly, smooth; spikes 1–2 1/2 in. long to 4 lin. broad; rhachis ciliate or woolly; spikelets 3–3 1/2 lin. long; lower glume ovate, acute to obtuse, 1 1/2–1 3/4 lin. long, upper 3–3 1/2 lin. long; valve of the hermaphrodite floret 3–3 1/2 lin. long; pale ciliate along the margins and hairy near the tip, keels scaberulous; lodicules 1/3 lin. long; anthers 1 1/2–1 3/4 lin. long; upper valves and anthers smaller; grain 1 1/2 lin. long. null
