culms scantily fascicled, ascending from a weak prostrate very slender base, up to 1 ft. long or more, glabrous, scaberulous below the panicle, otherwise smooth, rather many-noded, internodes (except the uppermost) enclosed; leaves softly and spreadingly hairy all over; sheaths tight, striate, rather thin; ligules up to 1 lin. long; blades linear, tapering to an acute point, 2–4 in. by 1–1 1/2 lin., flat, flaccid, or somewhat stiff, glaucous, strongly striate; panicle linear, 8–12-spiculate, secund; branches up to 7 lin. long, about as long as the internodes, 3–1-spiculate, erect, subcapillary, supported by ovate or oblong hyaline bracts, tips of pedicels minutely villous; spikelets pallid, 3 lin. long, with 1 fertile floret; glumes unequal, the lower broadly ovate, acute, 2 lin. long, subhyaline, the upper narrowly oblong, subacuminate, firmer, often light purplish, 3 lin. long, hyaline margins very narrow; valves shorter than the upper glume, fertile valve oblong, obtuse, almost smooth on the back, densely hairy along the sides, hairs 1–1 1/4 lin. long; body of barren valves clavate, glabrous; anthers almost 1/2 lin. long. null
