Notes
Here is included “ M. sp. = Gilbert et al. 7589” of Fl. Eth. 2(2): 175 (1995). This was described as M. substricta by Dorr in Fl. Trop. E. Afr. (2007), with type from E Ethiopia. It was stated to occur in Eritrea, Ethiopia, Somalia, NE Kenya and in Yemen, and to differ from M. muricata in its less appressed indumentum, longer stipules, smaller epicalyx bracts with a deeper sinus, and smaller sepals. However, the variation in these characters is more or less continuous and they occur in different combinations. Only a single taxon is therefore recognized here. Of the two syntypes of M. parvifolia Puccioni & Stefanini 531 is M. muricata, whereas Puccioni & Stefanini 563 from C1, between “Giré” and “Dablarror” is M. denhamii. Puccioni & Stefanini 531 is here chosen as lectotype.
