Names
MELALEUCA bracteata F. Muell. [family MYRTACEAE]
Information
Shrub or small tree 2–15 m tall with dark grey fissured bark; young shoots pubescent. Leaves spirally arranged, sessile, very narrowly elliptic-lanceolate, 0.7–1.8(–2) cm long, 1–2.5 mm wide, up to 7-nerved, glabrous or pubescent. Inflorescence spiciform, terminal at first but axis soon grows out; flowers in 1–3-flowered groups, each in the axil of a persistent ovate bract, in the specimen seen, flowers appearing solitary and axillary. Calyx green, pubescent outside; petals and stamens slightly greenish cream. Style glabrous.
Notes
One specimen seen seems to be this species (Kenya, Nakuru District: Mugwathi Farm, Oct. 1967, Shah in E.A. 13856).: The specimen was originally sent for naming since distillation had yielded an oil of possible economic value; it had been called M. genistifolia Sm. (correctly now M. decora (Salisb.) Britten), but it keys to M. bracteata in Byrnes’s paper.
