MELALEUCA armillaris (Gaertn.) Sm. [family MYRTACEAE]
Information
Graceful shrub or small tree 0.5–9 m tall with furrowed grey bark which peels from lower part of trunk; branches pendulous; characteristic white lines on shoots from which leaves originate. Leaves spirally arranged, needle-like, 0.9–2.8(–3.5) cm long. Flowers white in cylindrical spikes 2.5–6.5 cm long, 2.5 cm wide. Staminal claw 4–8 mm long with 10–20 white or rarely mauve filaments.
Notes
This well known cultivated species has been grown in Kenya (Nairobi, Karen, Hort. Gardner, 25 July 1973, Gardner in E.A. 15385) and Tanzania (Arusha District: Oldonyo Sambu, Schutz Farm, 10 Oct. 1945, Van Rensburg 157) (Jex-Blake, Gard. E. Afr. ed. 4: 119 (1957)).
