Information
Annual or biennial suffrutex up to 1 m. tall (usually under 60 cm.) with the habit of a Sida, sparsely covered with simple and 4-rayed stellate-strigose hairs. Leaf-lamina 3–6 × 1–4 cm., coarsely serrate, apex usually obtuse; petiole short; stipules c. 5 mm. long, lanceolate. Flowers solitary in the upper leaf-axils; pedicels c. 5 mm. long. Bracts of epicalyx 5 × 1 mm., linear. Calyx 8 mm. long, divided to c. 2/3; lobes ovate, acuminate, ciliate. Petals c. 8 × 4 mm., obovate. Staminal tube glabrous. Fruit c. 6 mm. in diam.; mericarps 2 × 3 × 1 mm., with 2 short dorsal spines near the middle, crowned in the ventral area with the persistent base of the style, the inner upper portion produced into an acute slightly hooked beak with a narrow sinus below, dorsally and in part laterally sparsely stellate-hairy and also dorsally setose.
Habitat
An introduced weed found along roadsides, on rubbish-heaps and in old cultivation.
