Description
A small tree occurring widespread from NW Himalayas to eastern Australia, which has been introduced to West Africa for cultivation in some francophone territories.Kamala is the powder consisting of glandular and stellate hairs rubbed off the ripe fruit. The stellate hairs contain a strong dye which can be mordanted to give fast orange and flame colours. Rottlerin and iso-rottlerin are present in the glands and these are taenifugal. Kamala has been official in numerous pharmacopoeias though nowadays it is not so much favoured. The drug remains in veterinary use. It has a long tradition in eastern medicine for the treatment of skin-troubles.The seed kernel contains 35–36% oil which is quick drying, and might be of use in paint-manufacture.
