Notes
VARIATION. Typical var. johannis has simple leaves, but there is variation through individuals with both simple and 3-foliolate leaves to others with 3-foliolate leaves only. On the whole, the 3-foliolate form is the commoner. The leaves are usually hairy, more rarely glabrous and shiny. The stigma varies from broader to narrower than the ovary, which is usually yellowish-pubescent. Var. johannis is very variable and, although it is possible to suspect the existence of local variants, none appear reliably distinct on any one or combination of characters. M. stenogyna Gilg & Bened. is placed here in the synonymy of var. johannis on account of the pubescent foliage, leafy inflorescences and number of stamens. Arwidsson (Bot. Not. 1935: 359) considered its affinity to be with var. pubescens, which it really resembles only in its glabrous fruits, a character which occurs but rarely in var. johannis. It cannot possibly stand apart as a distinct species and the weight of characters suggests it is best placed here.
