Information
Vigorous climber or trailer to 15 m. Leaf-blade broadly ovate, cordate, sinuate-dentate, asperulous or scabrid, 6–18 x 6–22 cm, palmately 5–7-lobed, lobes triangular to narrowly oblong-lanceolate, the central largest; petiole 1–15 cm long. Tendrils usually 2–4-fid. Monoecious. Male flowers racemose. Peduncle 7–32 cm long, finely pubescent. Pedicels 3–13 mm long, bracteate. Bracts glandular, 2–6 mm long. Hypanthium obconic below, expanded above, finely pubescent, 3–8 mm long. Sepals ovate, acuminate, 8–14 mm long. Petals deep yellow, broadly obovate, rounded, 2–4.5 cm long. Female flowers solitary. Pedicel 1.5–14.5 cm long. Ovary cylindrical, 20–40 mm long. Hypanthium 2.5–6 mm long. Sepals ovate-lanceolate or lanceolate, 8–16 mm long. Corolla as in male flowers. Fruit ellipsoid to cylindrical, subterete, slightly sulcate, 6–25 x 2.5–6 cm. Pedicel 1.5–15 cm long, stout. Seeds broadly elliptic in outline, 10–15 x 6–11 x 2–3 mm, smooth, dull, with a narrow thin wing-like margin.
Range
S3; also cultivated palaeotropics, also widely cultivated and naturalized in both hemispheres.
Altitude range
c. 30 m.
