Notes
Easily recognised by the grey corolla-tube, which is blue-black within, and generally with red lobes. Leaf-shape, venation and flower-size vary considerably and account for a number of synonyms listed above. Much of the variation is sporadic and evidently trivial when seen in the field, but some significant local divergence also occurs. Populations in SW. Ethiopia, at the edge of the range from Jimma to Bonga, at relatively low altitudes (1700–2000 m.) and relatively high rainfall, have small corollas (12–15 mm. long) with pale pinkish or apparently even yellow lobes. A comparable small flowered form ( L. bagshawei ) is common in the W. Rift populations (the species does not occur on Ruwenzori), but not clearly segregated from the large-flowered forms, tending to predominate at lower altitudes but not exclusively so. By contrast another small-flowered form occurs on the rain-shadow side of Mt. Kenya and nearby parts of the eastern Aberdares and seems to be an independent derivative. The populations from Meru and Kilimanjaro ( L. ehlersii ) are notably luxuriant, broad leaved and floriferous, but again these populations at the edge of the range cannot be usefully or precisely distinguished from the overall variation in the species.
