Information
Subshrubs or herbs with woody base, to 1–1.20 m. tall, glabrous. Leaves: lamina 2–5 × 0.6–2 cm., elliptic to elliptic-lanceolate, cuneate, slightly oblique, decurrent, acute or mucronate, narrow translucent margin (in dried state at least), sessile or with petioles up to 5 mm. long. Inflorescences of longer terminal and shorter, sometimes branching lateral spikes up to 32 cm. long; rhachis glabrous. Flowers: central flower subtended by glabrous, ovate bract c. 1.5–2 × 0.75–0.8 mm. with long central lobe and sometimes 2 slight lateral ones, lateral flowers each subtended by glabrous, ovate bract c. 1–1.25 × 0.6–0.75 mm. and 2 glabrous, elliptic-ovate oracteoles c. 0.75–1 × 0.3–0.5 mm. Sepals 1.25–2 × 1–1.5 mm., oblong to circular, rounded at apex, glabrous. Stamens: filaments 2.5–3.5 mm. long; anthers 0.5–0.75 mm. long, elliptic. Ovary 1–1.5 c. 1 mm., laterally compressed, glabrous; stigmas 0.5–1.5 mm. long. Fruit c. 1.2–1.5 mm. in diam., obliquely globose, black with raised lighter coloured patterning. Seed shiny black.

On sandy soils.
