Information
Annual or short–lived perennial herb, usually rhizomatous, prostrate, ascending or erect, glabrous. Stems usually numerous, 2–20 cm. long, somewhat sulcate. Leaves usually numerous, rather fleshy, up to 3–15 x 1–6 mm., linear to elliptic, ovate or spathulate, acute or obtuse at the apex, sessile or narrowing at the base into a short petiole, entire or rarely minutely denticulate. Flowers in upper leaf–axils; pedicels 2–20 mm. long, shorter to longer than the leaves; bracteoles linear, 0·5–1 mm. long. Hypanthium broadly obconical, 10–nerved, oblique, somewhat drawn out in the upper part on the ventral side, making the calyx bilabiate. Calyx–lobes triangular, erect, 1–2 mm. long, entire. Corolla 2·5–5 mm. long, white to blue, pink or purple, split to the base on the back, glabrous; lobes subequal, the upper two free or almost so, the lower three usually ± connate and with a crescent–shaped gland at the base. Stamens 2–4 mm. long, free from the corolla; filaments connate for most of their length; anther–tube dark, 1·2–2 mm. long, glabrous or very shortly pubescent on the back; the two lower anthers each with a hyaline appendage c. 0·4 mm. long and a tuft of minute hairs at the tip. Ovary semi–inferior. Capsule broadly obconical, 10–nerved; valves ±1·2 mm. long. Seeds elliptic, often somewhat twisted, ± 0·3 mm. long, finely striate.
Habitat
On moist ground such as river banks and edges of swamps and pools.

Notes
Belongs to Lobelia subgen. Metzleria (Presl) E. Wimmer, a small group of mainly S. African species characterised by subequal corolla–lobes, slightly bilabiate calyx, distinct appendages to the tips of the two lower anthers, and presence of a crescent–shaped gland at the base of the 3 lower corolla–lobes. The group has often been considered a distinct genus, Metzleria Presl. The delimitation of species within the group is not satisfactory at present. L. angolensis has usually been called L. depressa L.f., a name which has never been typified. Indisputable type material recently found in S–LINN proved to be Monopsis simplex (L.) E. Wimmer = Lobelia simplex L. (1771), to which L. depressa therefore is a synonym. If Metzleria is treated as a genus of its own, M dregeana Sonder will be the correct name for L. angolensis.
