Information
Annual herb 2–20 cm tall, hispid with tubercle-based bristles and short hairs. Leaves linear-lanceolate, 0.5–7.5 x 0.1–1 cm, acute or subacute. Flowers in spike-like cymes, subsessile, heterostylous; bracts leaf-like. Calyx 5-8 mm long, lobes linear, hispid, hardly enlarged in fruit. Corolla yellow, salver-shaped, 8–16 mm long, pubescent outside; lobes 1–2 mm long. Anthers oblong, c. 1.5 mm long. Style 2-fid; stigmas 2. Nutlets pyramidal-ovoid, 1.5–2 mm long, smooth or minutely tuberculate, with a triangular areole.
Range
N1–3 Djibouti, Eritrea, Socotra, Sudan, Egypt, Chad, West tropical Africa, Arabian Peninsula and eastwards to Pakistan.
Altitude range
50–850 m.

Notes
Duq-u-roone, fodadah, haji mali (Som.).The red dye in the roots is used as a cosmetic.
