Information
Large terrestrial herb.Perennating organs subterranean, a fleshy rhizome to 6 cm long or more, 2–3 cm in diameter; roots stout, white, 4–5 mm in diameter.Leaves 3–5, petiolate, 30–250 × 1.5–15.5 cm, lanceolate to oblanceolate, acuminate, ribbed, evergreen.Inflorescence 1–3 m tall, rather laxly several- to many-flowered; scape stout, with 5 tubular sheaths along its length.Pedicel and ovary 4 cm long; bracts 20–35 mm long, elliptic or obovate, usually brown and withered by flowering time.Sepals glossy olive-green, purplish at base, or purple-brown; petals pink to purple-pink; lip side lobes green veined with purple, mid-lobe purple with creamy-yellow crests; column and ovary purple; spur greenish tipped with purple.Sepals 17–27 × 7.5–10 mm, oblanceolate, acute, concave, ± erect.Petals 20–35 × 10–23 mm, ovate to elliptic, obtuse, lying over column.Lip 20–40 × 14–40 mm, 3-lobed, with 3 lines of fringed lamellae running down the centre for the basal two-thirds; side lobes erect, mid-lobe 11–20 × 10–13 mm, elliptic-oblong, obtuse, the edges undulate; spur 4–10 mm long, conical.Column 10–12 mm long, clavate.Capsule 3–6.5 cm long, pendent, ellipsoid.
