Information
rhizomes much thickened at the nodes; leaves linear or elongate-lanceolate, acute, immature at flowering time, ultimately 3/4–1 ft. or more long; scapes lateral, erect, 3/4–2 1/2 ft. long, with several spathaceous sheaths below; racemes lax, usually many-flowered; bracts lanceolate or linear-lanceolate, acuminate, 1/2–1 in. broad; pedicels 3/4–1 in. long; flowers large, purple with dusky or olivaceous sepals, and some yellow in the sac of the lip, sometimes lilac and white; sepals ovate-triangular, acuminate, reflexed, 1/2– 3/4 in. long; petals spreading, suborbicular or broadly elliptic, 1/2– 3/4 in. long; lip 3-lobed, very broad, rather longer than the petals; side lobes broadly rounded, very obtuse; front lobe broadly quadrate, obtuse or emarginate; disc with a pair of quadrate or transversely oblong erect calli in front of the sac, and 3 somewhat thickened veins extending towards the apex; spur saccate, very obtuse, about 1/4 in. broad by scarcely as long; column clavate, about 1/3 in. long, very broad at the apex. null

Also in East and West Tropical Africa, with almost invariably larger flowers.
